β Frequently Asked Questions
Can I extend my visa-free stay?
No. Visa-free stays cannot be extended. You must leave China before the expiration date and re-enter (though re-entry is generally allowed after a short gap).
Can I work on a visa-free entry?
Absolutely not. Visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, and family visits only. Working requires a Z visa and work permit.
What if I overstay?
Overstaying is taken seriously. Penalties include:
- Fine: 500 RMB per day of overstay (up to 10,000 RMB)
- Deportation: You may be deported and banned from re-entering
- Future visa applications: Overstay records make future China visas very difficult to obtain
Can I visit Hong Kong/Macau on a China visa-free entry?
Hong Kong and Macau have separate immigration. If you enter mainland China visa-free, travel to Hong Kong, and return to mainland China, it counts as a new entry β your visa-free clock resets.
Do children need visas?
Yes, children of all ages need their own passports and qualify for the same visa-free policies as adults.
